Off-season training
Basketball off-season training for kids
Ball-handling in the driveway, shooting form at the garage hoop, and footwork in the kitchen: off-season basketball at home, at a pace a growing player can keep.
For a winter basketball season, the off-season is roughly spring and summer. Free, no account needed to read or print.

Rest is part of it
The off-season is not a second season
- The American Academy of Pediatrics advises 2 to 3 months off a sport each year, in one-month blocks, and raising weekly training by no more than 10 to 20% at a time. HealthyChildren.org (American Academy of Pediatrics)
- The National Athletic Trainers' Association recommends fewer than 8 months a year in one sport, two rest days a week, and no more hours of organized sport a week than the child's age. NATA youth sport specialization recommendations
- Handle the ball a few minutes most days rather than an hour once a week.
- Mix in another sport: running, jumping and throwing in other games all carry over.
- Film one shot at the start of the month and one at the end; compare it with their own, never with anyone else.
Progress you can see
Growth against their own past
In SSTracker every session a player logs, and each personal best, goes on their own growth chart. Parents see it on their child's week card. It is only ever compared with the child's own past, never with other children.
