The steps

How it works

  1. Put a cone 8 steps away.
  2. Push the ball ahead with big touches and race to the cone.
  3. Stop the ball dead next to it with the sole of your foot.
  4. Walk back. Do 8 races.

Coaching point

Fast pushes, then a soft stop.

Safety: Run on grass or a flat, dry surface; walk back between races.

Make it fun

Play it, don't drill it

Game version

Stop-the-ball game: dribble to a cone and stop the ball dead with your sole when your partner claps. Your pair collects ten dead stops.

Challenge

Pick a level: Less (walk), Core (jog), More (finish with a turn). Beat your own best out of 10.

Story

You are a train pulling into the station, with the brakes on at exactly the right spot.
