The steps

How it works

  1. Mark a 10 by 15 yard area with an end zone at each end.
  2. Your partner passes to you and walks out to defend.
  3. Dribble past them and stop the ball in their end zone.
  4. Play 10 rounds each, then speed up to a jog.

Coaching point

Attack their front foot.

Safety: Stay on your feet and play the ball, not the player. No slide tackles; any live challenge is only with a coach watching.

Make it fun

Play it, don't drill it

Game version

End-zone game: in teams of two, the attacker dribbles into the end zone and stops the ball while the defender shadows with no contact. Swap roles each time.

Challenge

Pick a level: Less (defender walks), Core (defender jogs), More (a narrower box). Beat your own best.

Story

You are a mountain climber reaching the camp at the top.
