The steps

How it works

  1. A coach marks three fairways: one wide, one narrow, one with trouble on the left.
  2. For each, choose full swing or a shorter, safer swing.
  3. Hit 4 balls at each fairway.
  4. Count the ones that finished in play.

Coaching point

Pick the shot the hole wants.

Safety: Hit only from the marked spot on the range or practice area, keep everyone clear of your swing, and never walk out to get balls while anyone is still hitting. At the first thunder or lightning, stop and go inside; wait 30 minutes after the last thunder. Bring water, a hat and sunscreen.

Make it fun

Play it, don't drill it

Game version

Fairway-target game: two teams of two take turns hitting to a target zone, standing well apart. Each team counts only its own zone hits.

Challenge

Pick a zone: Less (big), Core (medium), More (small). Beat your own best out of 10.

Story

You are sending a rocket down the fairway to the landing pad.

My best

Beat your own count

Beat your own best out of 10. Only your own number counts: today against last time.
