The steps

How it works

  1. Stand guarding your partner as a shot goes up.
  2. Step toward them, pivot so your back is to them, and stay wide and low.
  3. Hold for two seconds, then go up for the ball.
  4. Do 12 reps at walking pace, then at jog pace.

Coaching point

Find, hit the spot, then get it.

Safety: For ages 14 and up. Go at walking pace first. Any body-to-body contact is only with a coach watching and a partner your size.

Make it fun

Play it, don't drill it

Game version

Bounce hunt: a partner tosses the ball off the wall or backboard and you track it and catch it with two hands. Swap, and count catches together.

Challenge

Pick a level: Less (low toss), Core (medium), More (a higher toss). Beat your own best catches out of 10.

Story

You are an eagle watching for the ball to drop from the sky.

Beat your own best catches out of 10. Only your own number counts: today against last time.
