The steps

How it works

  1. Tread 4 yards (4 m) from a partner.
  2. Catch the ball and hold it up for 3 seconds.
  3. Pass back without dropping in the water.
  4. Do 3 sets of 15.

Coaching point

Stay tall the whole time.

Safety: Swim only with a lifeguard or coach watching and, under 14, a grown-up within arm’s reach.

Make it fun

Play it, don't drill it

Game version

Eggbeater catch: tread with an eggbeater kick while a partner tosses you a ball. The pair counts steady catches, then swaps, with a coach watching.

Challenge

Pick a level: Less (hands on the wall), Core (hands up), More (catch and pass without sinking). Beat your own best run.

Story

You are a lighthouse standing tall in the water.

My best

Beat your own count

Beat your own best run. Only your own number counts: today against last time.
