The steps

How it works

  1. Bowl one ball.
  2. When it comes back, pick it up with both hands from the sides.
  3. Look for the shiny ring and point to it.
  4. Do this 5 times and see if the ring stays the same.

Coaching point

Your ball leaves clues.

Safety: Use the lightest house ball that fits your fingers; if it is hard to hold with one hand, it is too heavy. Children under 7 use a light ball, and a grown-up lifts it from the return for them. Pick it up with both hands from the sides of the return, never the front, and keep fingers clear of other balls.

Make it fun

Play it, don't drill it

Game version

Lane-reader pairs: roll once, say where the ball went and why, and your partner shares one thing they noticed. Swap.

Challenge

Pick a level: Less (one adjustment), Core (two), More (a plan for the next three rolls). Beat your own best reading.

Story

You are an explorer reading the map of the lane.
